HP Lovecraft was known for his horror and science fiction writing, which often focused on the unknown and the inexplicable. His writing is often characterized as being more intuitive and imaginative (Ne), drawing on feelings of fear and dread as well as logical or analytical thinking. In HP Lovecraft's writing, introverted thinking is the cognitive function that is more present. Introverted thinking and AUX Ne is characterized by the focus on the internal world, imagination and intuition (Aux Ne). He frequently depicted beings and entities that are incomprehensible to mortal minds and spoke on the horror that is beyond the sphere of human comprehension. He was also a firm believer in the value of inspiring awe and fear at the cosmos in his readers, and he frequently employed the use of vivid imagery and evocative language to achieve this effect in his works. As an added bonus, he frequently infused his stories with existential dread since he thought the real terror is in realizing how little and powerless we are in the face of an infinite and indifferent universe. Lovecraft has a signature high Ne writing style, which is whimsical and imaginative. His own work reflected this preoccupation with antiquity; he used old spellings and idioms to add gravitas and style. My impression of him is that he falls squarely on the Ne/Si spectrum (and so would most people who type him). Now comes the challenging part. Which is correct, Fi/Te or Ti/Fe, depends on the text in question. Despite his interest in the supernatural, he was an agnostic at heart, and as a cosmist, many of his works portrayed a universe devoid of deities. His emphasis on the meaninglessness of the individual life seems at odds with Fi dom (although, to be fair, this is by no means a measuring stick for the two function axes). Fi, like any other person, is entitled to her doubts. Simultaneously, he advocated Romanticism, and his works were permeated by complex shades of feeling. Like the author himself, many of his characters were afflicted with insanity. The INFP function stack is nearly perfectly embodied in several of his short stories, such as Celephais. This is brought up solely because some have suggested that Kuranes, the protagonist, is actually an identity of Lovecraft himself. The protagonist of the narrative is a dreamer who, after becoming disillusioned with the world around him, seeks refuge in his imagination, spiced with a little bit of nostalgia. Other stories, such as the most well-known The Call of Cthulhu, also have an INTP flavor. Like I said before, Lovecraft's prose often makes the reader feel little in the grand scheme of things. In this instance, Lovecraft presents this viewpoint in a rational, Ti-like fashion. Lovecraft struggled with interpersonal connections and was unable to find lasting love. Could this be a sign of inferior/low Fe levels? It pains me to say this, but Lovecraft was rather xenophobic for his period and often portrayed people of different races as monstrous. But I seriously doubt that this proves anything.
