[1/2] 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐈𝐓 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭 The Point Five is fixated on Ego-Stinginess which is a part of Adaptation Instinct, also known as Head Triad. This ego arises from a sense of confusion in childhood, when this ego “feels the sting of alienation early in childhood, which is characterized by withdrawal” (Ichazo on Point 5). This withdrawal in early life, combined with the instinct to adapt themselves in life, leads this ego to be needing competency because no one can be depended on and it’s up to the E5 to be self-sufficient by learning as much as they can. This would create the defense mechanism of Introjection. In this context, introjection means taking on the characteristics of the world by observation to themselves. Due to its position on Adaptation instinct and their need for competency, this mechanism creates the passion of Avarice, an avarice of knowledge of the world. E5 seeks to learn everything about the world by grasping, but since E5 feels that the world has rejected them (from their sense of early alienation), they do not want to interact with the world and hold up their energy instead. As Naranjo said, Avarice is a fearful grasping with a fantasy that “letting go would result in catastrophic depletion” (Character & Neurosis). However, behind this need of hoarding, lies the inner impending impoverishment. Therefore, we could understand this passion as a greediness to grasp everything about the world accompanied by retentiveness. This retentiveness could be understood as an unwillingness to “share” what they have and a retentiveness to their energy, which manifests in their detachment to the world that implies a compensatory clutching to oneself. As if the E5 lives alone in the world and no one could be depended on, E5 seeks to hold on to whatever they have while simultaneously grasping the world. When this ego structure meets the adaptational-related Social instinct, this would create a character that projects their avarice of knowledge that could give them a social standing. Ichazo called the neurotic need of this character “Totem”. Totem indicates both height and the character of being a constructed object rather than a human being (27 personajes en busca del ser). We could understand this neurotic need as a need to seek something sublime, extraordinary, beyond the people, instead of what there is. This makes the SO5 a very intellectual character. However, this comes with a price of elitism; in their search for the super ideal, they end up despising the ordinary. Ordinary life, ordinary people, ordinary things. They direct their Avarice towards higher meanings and ideals while holding back their knowledge. The super ideal could be a hero or someone they deem intellectual, and in their pursuit of becoming this ideal, they despise anything else. This makes SO5 the most arrogant E5 subtype, since they want to maintain their image as “the knowledgeable one”, despise the ordinary, and despise the people, while at the same time they always hide a part of themselves to make others “not higher than them”. However, all of these behaviors ultimately stem from the inner impoverishment of E5 itself; their seeking of super ideals is their way to cope with this. Ironically, by seeking the extraordinary and despising anything else, this would make the SO5 become impoverished, since they only have what they deem as extraordinary. This creates a vicious cycle of not wanting to share their “extraordinary knowledge” because this is what the SO5 only has, when all of this is ultimately self-imposed by SO5’s own elitism.

Biografia

The Social Five expresses the passion of avarice through a need for “super-ideals,” relating to others with common interests through knowledge and shared values (rather than emotional connection). In this Five, avarice is connected to knowledge. Needs for people and for the sustenance that relationships provide get channeled into a thirst for information. “Totem” refers to a passion for high ideals, the need to idealize experts and seek knowledge connected to whatever ultimate values this Five adheres to. Social Fives engage in a search for the ultimate meaning to avoid experiencing life as meaningless.
