Sometimes a fictional character’s type is debatable, and can be read in different ways, and sometimes a character’s type is so indisputable that it’s hard to imagine that anyone could read them as anything else. Will is the latter. At the time of writing this, only two episodes have so far been released and I haven’t read the source material, but already I’m certain that he’s an INFJ. He’s intellectually curious and extremely well-read, and yet manages to retain a strong sense of what he believes, and is resistant to having his mind changed by Cora. He shows an interest in Cora’s ideas and accepts her fully despite their differences (Fe), but privately remains firm in his own vision of how to understand the world (Ni); INFJs have a unique ability to engage calmly and impassively with a range of conflicting perspectives without wavering in their own way of connecting the dots, due to the interplay between Ni and Ti, and because feeling is a largely external process for them. He’s self-sacrificing, and has both a keen ability to read people and a desire to help them; he comments that he was less interested in ‘achievement’ than in ‘purpose’. By this, he means that he wants to be useful in a feeling sense, to help people in tangible, real-world ways. This is part of the reason he remains stubborn in his vision of the world; Ni-dominant people need to narrow in on solutions, to push aside alternate possibilities, because it helps them to see a clear course of action, and Will has decided that the way he sees the world is the best way for him to care for those around him. It will be interesting to see how he develops as he experiences further conflicts to his belief system.
