[1/3] Gu Yun as a Self-Preservation E7 SP7—His childhood name was Shiliu "十六", meaning “16”, since he was born on the sixteenth day of the first lunar month. When he was a kid, he lost part of his hearing and sight during an attack on the Black Iron Camp. Growing up, he was spoiled and stubborn, ignoring anyone who tried to tell him what to do. Even when the Old Marquis punished him in front of others, he wouldn’t show any weakness or shed a tear. As an adult, he is sharp, carefree, and speaks his mind freely. Yet, a bit of that spoiled kid still shows up now and then, especially in his taste for life’s little luxuries. He has a resonant, unwavering love for his men, country, and people and is ready to risk everything to bring peace. As a general, he's incredibly brave with a remarkable dexterity for reading his opponents and predicting their next motions, it's what’s led him to accomplishment repeatedly. As the third generation "Marshal Gu" to secure peace for the kingdom, the common inhabitants see him almost as a legendary figure, though he never lets it go to his head. Like other great generals in history, he doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of battle, including bloodshed and interrogation. He was a real handful as a kid, his pranks went so far that one almost cost his elderly teacher his life. His parents decided enough was enough and sent him off to the Black Iron Camp. While he was still really young, he got caught in an ambush there, leaving him partially blind and deaf. From that point on, the late Marshal Gu put him through intense, no-nonsense training to make sure he’d uphold the Gu family legacy. Though his father’s methods were harsh and maybe even cruel, they shaped him into who he eventually became. Without that tough upbringing, he has just ended up another spoiled, helpless noble. At just 15, he faced his first real battle when the Northern Barbarians attacked Great Liang. Eager and a bit overconfident, he rushed in on his own, which led to a tough defeat, losing 30 sets of heavy armor and leaving the old General Du injured. Two years later, when General Du caught a cold, those old wounds flared up, and sadly, he passed away. This tough experience left a mark on him. By the time he was 17, he took command of his first expedition, carrying forward the lessons he’d learned. When the Western Region was under attack, the court was in chaos, and officials were called to bring back retired General Zhong, 17-year-old Gu Yun stepped up and volunteered for the expedition instead. "Your subject is willing to go, the border area of the Western Regions, they are nothing but a group of clowns jumping about. Do they think that the wind slasher is so rusty it cannot cut down the heads of rats?" Over the next few years, he was either on the Northern Frontier battling the Northern Barbarians or stationed with the Black Iron Camp in the Western Region. When he was about 19, Emperor Yuan He sent him to the Northern Frontier to find the missing Fourth Prince and quietly investigate black market dealings. While there, he stumbled upon 12-year-old Chang Geng, who was cornered by wolves and saved him. From then on, he became Chang Geng’s “yifu.” In Yanhui, he kept his identity hidden and went by “Shen Shiliu.” After taking care of an attack on the village, he brought Chang Geng and his companions, Ge Pangxiao and Cao Chunhua, back to the capital to live at the Marquis Manor. On his deathbed, Emperor Yuan He asks him to officially take Chang Geng under his care until he comes of age, and he agrees without hesitation. After Emperor Yuan He’s passing, his eldest son, Li Feng, took the throne. Gu Yun stays in the capital for a while, mainly to keep things steady and discourage the Second Prince from stirring up trouble. During the New Year celebration that year, he brings Chang Geng and his friends, along with his soldiers, aboard a Giant Kite to enjoy the festivities from above. A tiger is brought into the crowd below, supposedly as part of a performance, but as the crowd presses forward, the tiger is startled and lashes out. Even though the tiger is a real threat, the moment he appears, the crowd quickly settles. He manages to calm the tiger and has the foreigner who triggered the whole incident arrested. Later, the mastermind behind the scene reflects on the outcome and notes: "In the heart of these Easterners, Gu and his family bear some sort of symbolic meaning, as long as the "black crow" flies through the night sky, even faced with a bigger crisis, these foolish people will be blindly stabilized like a herd of sheep who have found their shepherd dog."
