As you may have noticed, Will has always been an insecure little boy and therefore didn’t really want any problems, blaming himself for anything, so he just listened to others without a word to avoid conflicts, since he thinks he deserves the treatment. Look how he always insists on his difference, he feels different and he likes to express it through art, also his way to romanticize the world he lives in. During season 2 when he draws the ‘Zombie Boy’ as himself, in fact he focuses on his pain, him being different, and accepts the nickname so much that he decides to let it enter his world where he finds comfort in : his drawings. He thinks he’s different and judge it by how people perceive him. His brother Jonathan encourages him to focus on his crave for being different : yeah you’re different and it couldn’t be any better, it means you’re special. And that’s everything a four wants to hear. Will wants to be appreciated for being unique, being himself and no one else. He hates doing what people expect of him, for example when his dad would force him to go watch sports instead of drawing, letting him connect with his own world. Moreover, in season 4, Will has learnt a lot more about himself and finally being self aware about his homosexuality since as a four he connects himself with his feelings through many introspection times, he decides to affirm himself as he is, and choose Alan Turing, a gay scientist, as his hero. This sense of wanting to express his difference is a real four trait. «𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘴, 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥.» It’s hard to admit it but Will focuses on his pain all the time throughout the show. He points out how he feels abandoned by his friends but he just inflicts himself the pain rather than doing any kind of vengeance on others. That time when Lucas and Mike’s lack of enjoyment for the game got him destroy his own childhood refuge : Castle Byers. He decides to hurt himself, blaming himself for not wanting to grow up, calling the idea ‘stupid’ because of Mike’s words. Also during season 4 when he’s in his own room with Mike and tells him he deserves to be treated badly because of how negligent he has been with Eleven. It’s as if he’s waiting for Mike to tell him the word he’s going to say ‘’No, you didn’t deserve anything’’. He has always relied on Mike, the one he trusts, back then when he said : ‘’But don’t tell the others, they won’t understand’’. He expects nobody to understand him because he feels too much different and he wants his friend to understand that, his difference. Because just like he said in season 4, ‘’Sometimes when you’re different, you feel like a mistake. But you make her feel like she’s not a mistake at all, like she’s better for being different.’’ He needs to express how he feels to Mike, a special person for him, whom he expects to be understood by. He wants Mike to fulfill that need. But we’ll come back to these interesting phrases later. [part 1]
