If I hear "INTJ can't be e8" one more time I'm gonna have an aneurysm. I'll respect a real argument for why *Magneto* can't be e8 but not if you're basing it on the INTJ conflict. 👏People👏are👏complicated👏and conflict ≠ impossibility. Saying it can't happen is reductive. Trauma creates instincts that might conflict with primary goals and methods of behavior and it frequently throws a wrench in the works with typology. Being an INTJ e8 isn't *easy* but it's certainly possible. I'd like to remind everyone getting up in arms about this that typology isn't a proven science and is therefore frequently subjective in the first place. Saying "any MBTI can't be any enneatype" is closed-minded, black-and-white thinking that places too much trust in the typology system as a closed system set of rules. It's important to consider the much more scientific complexity of human psychology first and typology second. Besides, I'm pretty sure most of us came to PDB for actual character analysis over arguments about what's possible within a subset of rules. Nuance, please and thank you! Enneatype analysis: Type 8 (The Protector) is primarily concerned with justice as it relates to power. The core fear is being controlled or hurt by others and the core desire is protecting themselves and having autonomy in their lives. This extends to an inclination towards protecting the helpless and standing up to unfair uses of authority. e8s are assertive, decisive, and often somewhat anarchistic, and on the other hand can be aggressive, intimidating, and closed-minded. If there's one thing e8 can't abide, it's people with power abusing those who have none. 8w7 avoids control by demanding freedom from authority and addresses conflict head-on, while 8w9 avoids control by creating security through diplomacy. 8w7 seeks power while 8w9 seeks peace. 8w7s are generally more comfortable with direct conflict than 8w9s, though both are very direct, assertive, and value-oriented. Now, how does all that interact with and distort INTJ traits? Well, an INTJ 8 might be mistaken for an ENTJ due to being more forceful with their ideas and values than the typical INTJ, who aren't usually considered aggressive. INTJ e8s are more willing to step outside of their comfort zone in service of a goal, are more tolerant of conflict, more prone to anger, and have a more developed Te-Fi co-function. They're much more reserved than the usual e8, preferring to stand back and develop a complex, thorough strategy rather than charging impulsively into conflict. INTJ e8s access Fi primarily through anger but rely on Ni-Te in carefully deciding what to actually do about their feelings. Where an e8 of a more extroverted type is likely to react to conflict or excitement in a sudden, enthusiastic manner, e8's usual impulsivity is tempered by Ni-Te's methodical rationality. e8's intense passion about one's moral and personal values makes for a somewhat more extroverted INTJ. Where the typical INTJ might keep an opinion to themselves to avoid getting themselves into trouble, an e8 INTJ is not afraid to say what they think... even if they might later bemoan the situations it gets them into. Ni-Se gives an e8 the perceptive ability to meet others on their level and persuade them to join their cause or agree with them. Conversely, e8's penchant for challenging the status quo can mean making a lot of enemies. Pair e8's justice-driven idealism with INTJ's tendency towards arrogance and you're likely to see a streak of self-righteousness. For INTJ e8, life is a high-stakes game of chess. Sound familiar? All of these traits are present in Magneto. His primary concern is justice and freedom from oppressive authority. If no one in power is going to address it, he'll demand power in order to fix it himself. He effectively persuades others to believe in his ideals, carries out his radical plans with precise strategy but can also swiftly adapt to his plans being foiled, becomes very angry and vengeful at authoritarianism harming the powerless, has a soft spot for vulnerability but is also willing to sacrifice one for the good of many, seeks the power to achieve his vision and values those who place their trust in him, and when his plans fail he calculatingly withdraws and re-strategizes to succeed next time. I see where the 6w5 argument comes from as an 863 TriType makes perfect sense, but I think INTJ 8w7 is a better fit than INTJ 6w5. He's too aggressively assertive about his goals not to be type 8.
