The theory here makes reference to the four temperaments as an analogy with the four elements of nature: fire, air, water and earth. Just as the theory says, people can't have two temperaments, but instead they can have variations. Because, for example, choleric is represented by fire and phlegmatic is water, fire and water are oposites, no one can be dry, hot, cold and wet at the same time, it's contradictory. The original theory itself that was inspired by Hippocrates and actually created by Galen of Pergamum. In addition of being developed and adapted by some researchers of the area, like Hans Eysenck, Alan Gray and Robert Cloninger.
