"it wasn't being alive that troubled me, rather it was not knowing how to face life that scared me." - dying out of sight: hikikomori in an aging japan when people think of hikikomori, they think of a stereotype (ignoring that this very page asks to describe the stereotype itself). perhaps it’s an anime character, or maybe a description they’ve briefly read. the main characteristics are a shut-in that’s so isolated and caught up in their own world they don’t interact with others. hikikomori as a concept itself has perhaps thousands of potential origins, none of which are as simple as deciding to lock yourself in your room one day and leaving your life behind. in japan, the main cause is work burnout in a society heavily based on efficiency and perfection. i believe it is incredibly hard to type hikikomori itself, but there are a few things that remain a constant — there usually is a messy room, characterised by there being some form of method to the madness. minimal energy is expended and there may be signs of passions manifesting physically, figure collections, manga, books. there is a large focus on being extremely caught up in fantasy and viewing people (or for some, society itself) as naturally torturous. any type can be a hikikomori but Ti and Fi tend to be present in most of the hikis i have interacted with. you can almost never accurately type someone who’s mind has become rotten from zero social interaction and an extreme dependence on social media or their passions, but i have met many who completely drop their interests, be it in gaming or art, writing or coding. the lack of motivation and willpower leads to a natural tendency to believe that nothing will get better, and even if it could, why even try? everything is beyond fixing anyways. that mindset reminds me heavily of a 4 fix, as 5 core is already most likely — i find sp5, sx5, so4, sp9 to all be likely enneagrams, but isolation is not limited to any type. INXP makes up a large portion of hikikomori i have interacted with, but there seems to be a fair amount of either believing people who are not taking the same path in life are worse, or torturous, or perhaps they just want to be left alone. envy is found heavily in the so4 hikikomori, where there is a strong focus on what is lacking — “i could never get a job or a life anyways, everyone would hate me.” it is total submission to the loss of progression, and from every so4 hiki i have met, it stems in a lack of progress at an early age leading to total self-initiated failure. usually, later on, they may realise what has happened, that they brought it upon themselves and they have now genuinely experienced failure after wasting their chances. being extremely hypersensitive to failure, i believe these hikis are least likely to “recover” at an older age. the greed for survival in an sp5 makes them a likely classic archetype for the hikikomori. they value their safe space to a high degree, and hikikomori are known to never travel out of their bubble, which is either their room or home. withdrawing and observing the outer world usually manifests in utilising the internet as a “barrier” of sorts to reality, sorting out harmful and painful interactions with others in real life where they are unsafe by making sure it all takes place through an object in which they do not have to make themselves vulnerable. the extreme focus on energy preservation leads them to be perhaps the laziest hikikomori. the hyper-flexibility to demands has lead to, in my experience from witnessing hikikomori of this type, a form of false agreement. they will “attempt” to get better when demanded from their supply source (usually parents) but will never end up doing so, as they do not view the outside world as either safe or worth expending energy or time on. when you have a world that’s perfectly made for you in your room, you do not ever need to go out or even perceive physical reality. the sp9 is an unorthodox but still common form of hikikomori, and make up a decent percentage of people i have met. they tend to be the ones that indulge in their hobbies the most, to escape their physical stressors, but they also completely forget their own self beyond that. they feel almost completely disconnected and when engaging with them i notice absolutely zero passion or regard for their situation. they do not want to face the issues and consequences of their situation, and replace it with their hobbies. they are least likely to join active hikikomori communities, i’ve found, as they are focused on the most basic of tasks, due to their type being mixed with total isolation.
ชีวประวัติ
No man is an island, but hikikomori are peninsulae. A hikikomori is a specific, extreme form of The Shut-In who hasn't left his bedroom for a ridiculously long time (like, at least six months). Hikikomori (ひきこもり) means "pulling inward". It comes from a verb form Hikikomoru, compromised of two words: hiki (ひき), meaning "to withdraw", and komoru (こもり), meaning "to seclude oneself" https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Hikikomori
