Si > Se Fi > Fe Ni > Ne Te > Ti Chiaki is an easy ISTJ. I'm honestly surprised there are so many ENTJ votes - tertiary Se? And he's not Fi-inferior either, imo. Below I'll address Si vs. Se, then Fi vs. Fe, and lastly ISTJ vs. ENTJ. Warning: it's a long-*** post. // Si > Se Chiaki's Si is probably his most domineering function, and absolutely quashes his Se in 99 out of 100 situations. He naturally loves and is comfortable with adhering to what has been established and time-tested, and relies heavily on his personal experience and what he is familiar with. Chiaki is very disinclined to branching out from what is "proper," but this is not to say he'll NEVER branch out - remember, every person uses all 8 cognitive functions and it's not like ISxJs are utterly against all things new. But Si is Chiaki's dominant and preferred function. He is almost always initially adamantly opposed to unconventional and ridiculous ideas (e.g. Mine's vertical violin stance). He is the type of person to strive for stability and consistency, rather than someone who would be inclined to enjoy experiences through his 5 senses, like types with tertiary Se (ENxJs). // Fi > Fe I think it's safe to say that Fe is Chiaki's weakest judging function. He really does not give a damn about the influence of his actions or words on others (e.g. when Chiaki conducts it is very difficult for him to take the group atmosphere and others' mental states and emotions into consideration; his ex-girlfriend also complains about how he never holds back even a smidge with his musical commentary and critique). What's more important to Chiaki is his principles and values, and he is unlikely to compromise them, as seen whenever he conducts like a madman. Another example is when he absolutely shreds a piano student for being unable to practice because of part-time work in order to fund her tuition - Chiaki mercilessly and unapologetically asks, "Why are you even at music school if you don't have time to practice?" Fi is not Chiaki's inferior function. Tertiary Fi suits him much better, as he has simply-defined, but strong values. // ISTJ vs. ENTJ A few comparisons between ISTJs and ENTJs. source: https://personalityatwork.co/personality-type/ISTJ/vs/ENTJ ~Focus~ ENTJ: loves a goal, something to run at and they will excel at making sure other people are just as enthused and understand the need to get on and drive for closure. ISTJ: have an incredible eye for detail, focus and a desire to drive for closure. They will want to slowly assimilate information and be sure of their facts before moving forward. ~Creativity~ ENTJ: loves the complex and the big picture. ISTJ: are more factual than creative and their value is exactly in ensuring what has been agreed upon is delivered. ~Issues they'll fight on~ ENTJ: does not like anything preventing progress... Their whole purpose is to make change happen and they do not like a slow pace. ISTJ: have a strong sense of right and wrong and this tends to be around what has been agreed. All in all, I think the main source of the confusion is that Chiaki is very authoritative and dominant when he conducts. This is absolutely true, and he does exhibit ENTJ mannerisms then. But people adapt their behavior depending on the situation and what is needed. I am a very clear ENTP, but at work most people think I'm an ExTJ, probably because of how much I rely on Te and subdue my Ne (I work in insurance just for context). And that's absolutely right - at work, I make decisions more often based on Te than Ti, unliked when I'm "at ease." But MBTI is about a person's cognitive functions in their natural, most comfortable state, and along these lines, ISTJ fits Chiaki the best imo.
