There is a recurring theme of ISTPs being pulled into these so called “fi” narratives. Associating films that are about revenge or identity being fi when the character themselves doesn’t make decisions using introverted feeling is what messes people up. In fact there are multiple movies where ISTPs take revenge on someone despite it not being “rational” to an outsider's perspective. Oftentimes taking revenge is so personal to the individual that the reason behind it should only make sense to the individual and no one else. Often times it ain't even about revenge. anyways, here are some examples of ISTPs that get labeled as ISFP because of the whole revenge story. John Wick: A classic ISTP that many people label as ISFP because he decides to get "revenge" on the mafia that killed his dog. Many people think this act is irrational/Fi but as someone that has watched all the movies, I know that this wasn’t just about getting revenge, there is so much more to the story. John Wick wanted a peaceful life away from his past as a mercenary/assassin and wanted to spend this comfort with his wife. However, after his wife dies he only has his dog which was a present from her. Now flash forward to the present, the mafia arrives at his house and demands that John return them a favour however, John wants nothing to do with his past. Because of this the mafia kills the dog, burns down his house and then injures Wick. John Wick realizes that the mafia were right, he can’t escape his past, he has to return to the underworld and defeat everyone before they kill him. Yoon Ji-woo (My Name): Another ISTP that gets labeled as ISFP. Basically Jiwoo’s dad gets murdered in front of her by this unknown person. She goes to the police hoping they would help her find the killer and seek justice for her dad’s death. But when the police find out her dad was a gang member they cease to help her. Angered, she tries to find her dad’s killer and eventually is taken in by this mob boss that does a good job psychologically manipulating her in wanting nothing but death and revenge. I won’t spoil the rest but once again, as a character Jiwoo never leads by fi, she has no morals or compass that guides her, she does what needs to get done regardless of what that turns her into. She never reflects on her actions and how they affect her as a person. She has such a strong disconnection with who she truly is a person and doesn’t care about herself at all. Ok-Joo (Ballerina): Very similar story of revenge where her friend is sexually assaulted and murdered. The friend leaves a note asking Ok-Joo to avenge her which she does. You know surprisingly this character does not get typed as ISFP but her storyline and actions are devoid of fi similar to Jiwoo. The next part of this debate is to explain that it is possible for ISTPs to get philosophical especially when it comes to their art or craft and that philosophy does not have to be dom fi or ni. Philosophy is simply a way of understanding life, a way of understanding what you’re passionate about, a way of understanding what you're doing with your life. In fact upon researching what influences inspired Blue Eye Samurai, amongst many things was in fact the influence of Musashi Miyamoto a famous samurai and renowned philosopher. Now Miyamoto is an ISTP and there is no debate about it, he took his craft seriously and would go on to philosophize about what makes a true and great samurai. He is a great example of ISTPs using their Ni to further understand their crafts and strengths and that you don’t need to be an INTJ to ponder and think and to provide great insight.
