Maki is the definition of a 3V Philistine trying to be a 4V. It's disgusting. I hate it. At least he had the balls to confess but unfortunately, he doesn't deserve to have any balls over what he did to his mother. He is delusional. The worst part is that he knows and everyone has to adjust for him. It's not even romantic after that crap I had to read through after chapter 20 or so. Imagine that all of this is an elaborate scheme to make the prettiest girl fall over him, exactly what his dad did. He's making his mother accept it, despite never being present for her, despite never supporting her while he goofs off with the two prettiest girls in the class. Acting all aloof and innocent by "sleeping over" without contacting his own mother, who is very much alone. Him being just a kid who went through a divorce doesn't justify his actions. In fact, that naivety despite him being supposedly capable like when he did that crappy pixel art thing means that he is proactively or negligently avoiding her own mother. Then he puts her on the spot by not talking to her, and instead hangs out with his father. All of this while he's protrayed as the victim. As if the divorce ever affected him. Literally zero effects on his school life and social life with Asanagi during the first 20 chapters. If you think I'm expecting much out of him, it's actually the opposite. The least he can do is talk to his mother normally and not cause any more burdens. Why does no one call out his actions? It's because if you do, you're the one who's inconsiderate of his circumstances (that he anchors himself to) and that you don't understand his pain (which he doesn't deserve as he devalues his own mother). Instead, he's rewarded by being surrounded by the two cutest girls in the class as he looks down on all the others. Intentional or not, it's set up that way. Why else would there be a need to emphasize him being a social outcast that has to solve their problem? For the school festival? The author ain't slick.
