SEGA used to be all about experimentation and "endless possibilities". That's how the "Dark Age" came about in the first place. Every game back in that era brought something new to the table, and surprisingly, that was what got me invested in the Sonic franchise. I think they're currently Si gripping, playing it safe with things like the same boost gameplay style across all the games in the past DECADE, the cheesy plotlines, the wisps, and the pointless overuse of Classic Sonic just to feed into the fandom's and their own nostalgia. Take it from the amount of times Sonic Team have avoided advocating for a potential SA3 out of fear that they'll create another '06. That being said, their core 9 disintegrating to 6 makes so much sense. I'll cite a comment I read from a youtube video by J's Reviews that covers how the Meta Era (2010-2019) was an embarrassing waste: "The main problem with Sonic in the 2010s is that Sonic Team and SEGA as a whole are just in a state of constant fear. Fear of using characters. Fear of using gameplay mechanics that have potential because they were in games that have garnered a bad reputation. Fear of upsetting fans. Fear of trying something new and unique. There's no one there anymore who has a vision for the franchise, they just put stuff out like mindless zombies. Say what you will about the 2000s' Sonic games but Yuji Naka and his team always had a concrete vision of what Sonic should be and what story they wanted to tell, and they did it without worrying what anyone would think." https://youtu.be/MYI2nGuLYRM The only way they can move forward from here is if they soft reboot the series and take it in a new direction. Once they get out of that nasty grip and start using all their functions in a healthy manner, they can push themselves to maybe take the risk and bring the adventure gameplay style back with some new elements, whether it be them remaking SA1 and SA2, FINALLY giving us the SA3 we deserve, or just creating a whole new game in general.
