The Saab JAS 39 Gripen, also designated as the F-39 Gripen , is a fourth and a half generation single - engine light multipurpose fighter manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab. It was designed to replace the Saab 35 Draken and 37 Viggen in the Swedish Air Force ( Flygvapnet ). The Gripen has a delta and canard wing configuration, as well as fly-by-wire flight controls. It is powered by a Volvo RM12and has a top speed of Mach 2. Such aircraft were later modified to NATO interoperability standards and for aerial refueling. "JAS" is the abbreviation of "Jakt, Attack, Spaning" (in Portuguese Hunting, Attack, Reconnaissance ), and " Gripen " (from the Greek Γρύπας, in Latin Gryphus and in Portuguese, Grifo ) is the name of the creature mythology of antiquity, half lion, half eagle, whose image is also present in thelogo of the Saab brand itself.
