In the game, much of the relationship b/w Tess and Joel is hinted at and left to the imagination. On the show, we get to see how: 1. Tess loves and cares for Joel 2. She is the one who is calling the shots (E.g., I told Robert that I would make sure Joel won't hurt you, but I want you to hurt him) 3. She is the one who can talk sense into Joel & give him a sense of direction. Also, she probably is why Joel didn't become a monster who commits meaningless violence.
