Not a hot take but rather an explanation, of why the Requiem ending better suits the purpose of Eren’s character, development, and reason why. People who watch this show are open-minded, open-minded people strive for meaning and understanding. To understand Eren’s why, Mappa gave their explanation in his conversation with Armin. He said this was the predetermined outcome, and he didn’t know the future after his death. Being an idiot that got his hands on power, this was the only outcome that he was able to make possible. That explanation ties back to Mappa’s interpretation of Eren being “a slave to freedom”. Requiem takes “a slave to freedom” and makes it an ideology he follows rather than a consequence of his actions. In requiem he completes the rumbling, and Paradis is all that remains. Him being a slave to his goal rather than the future itself ties back to everything we knew and loved about Eren up until that point. Take the end of season 3 with both perspectives. “If we kill all our enemies over there… will we finally be free?” Him knowing he chose to commit these acts, and having to live with it, rather than being forced to by the future he saw is the biggest change they could’ve made. Showing his younger self what freedom was, to give him the drive to keep moving forward is a big change I think suits this ending much more than Mappa’s.
