The real Collins was described by the real Fitzjames as "mad." As for the fictionalized portrayal, he seems to be a man who values and prioritizes rules, structures, systems, and memories above all else, and his world threatens to go topsy-turvy courtesy of unstable lower Ne taking over. When the ships are frozen in for the winter, he signs up for the all the work he can because he wants the structure and doesn't want to face his "flurried" thoughts, which sounds to me like inferior Fi feelings that he is attempting to suppress, hence me typing him as ESTJ; I would think an ISTJ would be more comfortable being alone with one's thoughts and feelings.
