(Outdated info, this backstory no longer applies to him. His character arc is still being written in the main story) About Ivan: Age: 17-18 Height: 6'2" Birthday: September 27 Personality traits: level-headed, social chameleon, adaptable, imaginative, quick thinker, escapes his problems, acts cheerful and spontaneous but is really more calculating than he looks, seemingly carefree, occasionally rude but doesn't always mean it, "two-faced," somewhat selfish, still cares about people though, especially his friend and his sister Appearance: Ivan has blonde hair and teal eyes. He wears hoodies often. Role in story: deuteragonist Ivan, like many other characters from Polarized, has an aura, or a power source for superhuman abilities. He's an illusioner, but not particularly skilled due to his low affinity for magic. Since he lives in a society where aura-havers are discriminated against, Ivan has learned to hide his "curse", passing himself as a normal person without any supernatural impediments to get by. This may have been one of the factors that led to his abilities of blending into social circles, lying off the bat, and getting away with a lot of things undetected. Being Skye's older brother, Ivan acts as her voice of reason, and is quick to remind her of her flaws and oversights. He can sometimes be insensitive when going about this and accidentally hurt her feelings, but most of the time he means well. He and Skye have a love-hate relationship with each other, as they bicker a lot and often find the other's behavior confusing or irritating. However, the two of them more or less get along. At one point Skye admits that she wouldn't know what she'd do without Ivan. Throughout his childhood, Ivan's parents encouraged him to lie low. They didn't want him doing anything too high-risk or ending up in situations where his aura could manifest, as that would give Ivan away and he could be sent off to a shock tag facility or worse. They offered to watch over him and keep him at home just like they did for his sister, but Ivan refused— he did not want to end up isolated or excluded from society, and preferred to have the same opportunities and experiences that an aura-free person would. He hated the idea of having his freedom restricted in any way or missing out on what "normal" kids got to experience. And so, he went to a public school while his sister got homeschooled. Ivan was a gifted and popular student who relied on his natural talents to get by. True he was a bit lazy and easily distracted, but he still scored high and was able to pick up new concepts quite easily. Sometimes he'd cast illusions on people just to see what he could get away with, but most of the time nobody knew it was him. However, Ivan was discovered once and got exposed to his entire school as a magic-user, forcing him and his family to move to a different neighborhood. This event affected him significantly, even more than he realized, and he began to use magic less frequently, causing his aura to weaken. Most of Ivan's illusions end up half-baked now due his lack of practice and the psychological toll that the incident took on him. (Auras are connected to mental and emotional states, so somebody's mood, personality, and even trauma can affect their magic levels) At the time Ivan got exposed as a curse-bearer, he quickly lost his position as the smart popular student, and received a lot of backlash from his peers. At one point he got beaten up so severely that he couldn't come back to school the next day, and that's when his family made the final decision to move from Southfort (their former neighborhood) to Maplesprings. But even when all of that happened to him, Ivan's not one to dwell on his problems. He moved on fairly quickly and decided that he would get a fresh start at Maplesprings, and he did. At one point he befriended an aloof plant mage named Luka Archer, arguably his only true friend among the sea of people that stuck around him only for popularity. Ivan didn't really care about them but kept them around anyways, mainly for the ego boost. After befriending Luka, Ivan learned of Cloudgate's last mages and their residence on the island of Avriya. He ended up becoming an ally to the Avriyans, joining them on their mission to bring back magic and create a place where aura-havers can thrive. Though he didn't take part in training his powers himself, and only used them to fool around or prank his sister, Ivan still held a deep respect for the mages. However, when Skye found out about Avriya and wanted to become a mage, Ivan tried to prevent her, but he eventually agreed on allowing her to learn magic— with strings attached, of course. He knew that the mainlanders couldn't find out about the island base, because if they did, then all of Avriya could get into trouble and many people's lives would be affected. Magic, curses, and the like are not only frowned upon, but illegal in Cloudgate. (continued in replies)
