(1/2) Ni: Temnova relying on the notion that events would happen exactly as she planned them (Dima would interpret her words a certain way, he would break out, she would have a convenient alibi to fall back on) seems indicative of Ni linearity in her approach to the abstract. This is a pattern she consistently shows—in “Like a Dog”, she entertains no other possibility than Dima coming back to the lab, and for no concrete reason. She just knows based on… something that she doesn’t explain that he’ll eventually be back. Her idea that he should just accept that he can’t choose his own fate is based on her own thinking, a specific scenario she’s fashioned in her own mind that she’s certain will come to pass. Her character song being dominated by this perspective rather than, say, external references, seems to indicate that Ni is her leading function. Fe: I actually think it’s easier to make a case that Temnova lacks Fi than it is to make a case for her Fe, but even then, I think a positive argument for Fe can be made. When she considers ethical dilemmas, she does it from the perspective of her institution, an external reference, never herself. (It’s a different matter with what she considers useful or what makes sense to her, which is something she subjectively determines, but more on that in my 2nd comment.) Fi is a function that determines what’s morally or socially correct solely by subjective criteria. That’s how you get those cool brooding INTJ characters who have epic internal struggles about questions of morality (e.g. Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment). INFJs, on the other hand, look at morality from a group perspective: what would align best with the group? How should I best fit in and enforce group norms? And Temnova’s really good at working with the emotions of others, which kind of fits in with the high Fe manipulator stereotype. (Yes, it’s a stereotype, but it’s one because higher functions give one a kind of control that the same function in a lower position doesn’t. Hence tertiary/inferior Fe users having group trouble, and dom/aux Fe users being able to work within and play around with group morality fairly facilely.) In a Tumblr post, Ferry suggests, in fact, that Dima (an ISTP) could learn how to manipulate people’s emotions better if he spent some more time under Temnova’s tutelage…
