Set primarily in post-war Japan of the 1950s, this mystery novel series is characterized by its incorporation of folklore into the narrative. Each title in the series is named after a yokai (supernatural creature) depicted in Toriyama Sekien's illustrated collections, such as "Gazu Hyakki Yagyo." While these yokai do not appear as tangible entities within the stories, the bizarre cases that resemble these creatures are solved by Akihiko Chuzenji, known as "Kyogokudo," through a method called "tsukimono otoshi" (exorcising spirits). The novels delve into the origins of these yokai from various perspectives, including folklore and logic. Although often categorized as mysteries with the "tsukimono otoshi" serving as the "reveal of the mystery," there are also works within the series that emphasize a legendary narrative over traditional mystery "tricks."
