"Repellent though it was to Constant, this environment [at the college of Saint-Sulpice] did not dampen his religious ardour. 'I retreated to my cell, overwhelmed with discouragement and grief. Despite the advice of my priest I fell to praying with abundant tears which relieved me little, then I had the thought that it was up to me to rekindle these hearts which charity had abandoned. I greatly pitied the religion that had been in the care of such children. It seemed to me that this religion was holding out its hand to me and saying: "My son, do you also wish to forsake me because you see that I am widowed and desolate?" Then, with the fervour and devotion of a young man, I cried: "No!" And I resolved to remain at the seminary and swallow all its unpleasant features.'" - Eliphas Levi and the French Occult Revival by Christopher McIntosh

Éliphas Lévi Zahed, born Alphonse Louis Constant (8 February 1810 – 31 May 1875), was a French ceremonial magician and author of more than twenty books about magic, kabbalah, alchemical studies, socialism, and occultism. Born the son of a shoemaker in Paris, Constant originally trained to become a Catholic priest, but opted out one week before being ordained due to disagreements he had with the church. He spent his next 14 years between teaching, illustrating, contributing to small magazines, and publishing his socialist and religious writings. At the age of 40, after experiencing a tumultuous period in his life, Constant renamed himself Éliphas Lévi and began his career as one of the most influential occultists of the 19th Century.
