[1/3] — Baizhu is SO7. Thank you Baizhu for coming home easy. This includes spoilers for his story quest and character stories. I was a shooter for SX5 LEFV Baizhu from the start, but after playing his story quest, I must concede. Given his lore, I think Baizhu is actually a good example of an SO7. I’d like to mention user @[Raitto] since they’re the one who initially came up with this take! I was a little disappointed that 3F couldn’t come to fruition, but I think Baizhu being the type defined by its self-sacrifice makes a lot of sense. 𝟭. 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗢𝟳. — “The social E7 is the counter-type seven, in the sense that it is difficult to recognize in him the passion of gluttony, because he strives to hide it with an altruistic behavior that, in some way, should purify him from the guilt of feeling an attraction to pleasure or to one's own advantage. This is an attraction that he tries not to feel by pursuing an ideal of himself and the world: he sacrifices his gluttony to be better and for a better world where there is no pain or conflict.” (27 Personalities in Search of Being) E7 as a type is defined by its vice of gluttony. In this context, gluttony refers to a sense of idealism and need for more—a pervasive avoidance of dissatisfaction and pain. In order to avoid a harsh reality, the world is seen through the lens of idealism. This gives the E7 a sense of self-aggrandizement and narcissism; its self-image becomes exalted as it searches for greater and greater. I believe this is most unabashed in the SX7, who becomes a pleasure-seeker with rose-tinted glasses in avoiding a harsh reality. However, SO7 is the countertype for a reason. In the SO7, there is an active denial of one’s own gluttony, hence its title of “Sacrifice”. As the quote above outlines, someone of this type will reject their own gluttony in the name of a greater world, rejecting themselves for an ideal. For this reason, SO7 is actually quite a contradictory type; it will sacrifice oneself, but this is all in the name of a self-centered vision. The rejection of gluttony manifests through altruism, but this all comes back to the SO7’s image and realizing the utopian world they seek. Given Baizhu’s story quest, I find his rejection of gluttony extremely clear. His character is founded on this. It’s revealed that through a contract made with Changsheng, Baizhu has the ability to transfer his own life force to others, as well as take on others’ illnesses for himself to bear. The relentless self-sacrifice he goes through alone is a huge indicator of SO7; this is all in the name of avoidance of pain, such is typical of any E7, and the pain that he seeks to alleviate lies exactly in the social sphere. 𝟮. 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺. Baizhu’s desire to alleviate the illnesses of everyone around him is completely divorced from any sense of pragmatism. This type of extraordinary thinking is typical of any E7, and the fact that he believes that /he/ is the one to do it is indicative of the exalted sense of self and narcissism all E7s experience. ⚕️ Baizhu: “Then it's decided. If there's a life in front of me that deserves to be saved, why shouldn't I do everything within my power to save it?” As I previously mentioned, SO7 is driven by its idealism in the social sphere. It seeks a world where there is no pain or conflict. It’s an entirely unrealistic desire which Baizhu relentlessly chases, and even acknowledges the absurdity of. ⚕️ Baizhu: “But when one with an altruistic nature gains access to this art, they are more seduced than the average person by the miracle of overturning the laws of life and death. Though they know better than anyone else the fate that awaits them, when faced with the sorrows of humanity and the pain of losing their nearest and dearest, they cannot help but reach beyond human means… They are like moths that throw themselves into the flame, seeking a glimmer of hope in a dark world filled with pain and suffering.” What Baizhu says here nearly perfectly reflects the pain avoidance of E7, and expanding this to apply to the social sphere—avoidance of pain in the wider world, which is an example of the type’s social idealism. — “The social E7 lives on projects and fantasies about how he can realize his dreams, confusing the imagination with the concrete act of realization, and often remaining in the ideal illusion.” (SO7 Trait Structure) — “Social Sevens are characterized by relinquishing their personal freedom and aspirations for social ideals. They have a profound sense of obligation toward others and feel that they must sacrifice themselves to fulfill what they see as their responsibilities.” (Sandra Maitri's SO7 Description) Baizhu, ultimately, made a contract with Changsheng to do exactly this—taking on the pain of others’ as his own in a need to ease suffering and discord. This sacrificial nature of causing himself pain to alleviate others’ brings me to my next point.
