alright i’ll be the one to finally try and explain this typing. most of his life is unknown, so i will work with what we do know— donatello’s early work started out with a more gothic look, likely attributed to the influence of his mentors. he built his technical skill (strong si) before moving into what made his art his own. over time, his work became notably unique, pushing towards a more grand, classical style like the statues of ancient Greece and Italy— he is one of the most notable early renaissance artists, and greatly influenced this scene. he plays with movement, material, and other elements of sculpture to give them a unique, more emotionally significant appearance (this is why i have a strong inclination to type him as a 4, though which wing i’m not as certain). there isn’t much evidence that he desired others’ approval in his art, as he portrayed his subjects in intentionally different ways than the previous standards with the intention of expressing a concept/feeling. this is why i chose 4w5 in the end rather than 9w1. now, why ne auxiliary rather than se? his fi and ne often go hand and hand in his art, which a key example being his depiction of Judith and Holoferenes: “The sculpture, meant to be admired from any angle, captures Judith about to decapitate the Assyrian general Holofernes with a wicked-looking scimitar and so save the Jewish people. The statue's pedestal once carried an inscription which included the line 'Kingdoms fall through luxury, cities rise through virtues' which reminds that art had a political purpose as well as an aesthetic one.” he was so set in this moral devotion that reportedly, despite having ties to the medici family and being able to live a vastly comfortable life, he only owned painting supplies and nothing else! he saw a greater purpose to his skill in art than his ability to ‘be the best’, as michelangelo often claimed about himself, and an internal importance to him that suggests Ne and Fi. most of his subjects have the purpose of presenting a bigger concept, like his famous depiction of David. his later masterpiece, a sculpture of mary magdalene, also suggests a lot about the artist’s personality and intention. while mary typically was shown as beautiful in artistic depictions, he INTENTIONALLY made this work look rough— leaving it with a rough finish and ragged clothing, and a lost expression on her face. this statue was likely put up as motivation and encouragement for other repentant prostitutes, as mary magdalene was. he sacrificed technical skill to achieve a powerful artistic effect for a goal based in morals/empathy. i hope that is a pretty good explanation for INFP 4w5.
