Typing Mapleshade as a 9 might seem odd, given it's not a common type for a villain. But looking at how Mapleshade was before her exile and losing her kits, it actually fits her very well. She is the sx subtype, meaning the way she forgets herself and deeper reflection is to merge with another person, which we see her doing with Appledusk and her kits. She is utterly devoted to them, all of her thoughts consisting of how much she loves them. Unlike a 2, she is never trying to "seduce" her family, make them love her because of a need to be loved back, or trying to present herself as the hero who is always helpful to them - she just is completely immersed in them and lives for them. One could argue she does try to "seduce" Crookedstar, but this is not in the service of being loved like for a 2, Crookedstar is just an instrument of revenge to her who she could care less if she gets love from. Another trait of 9s is that they are a positive outlook type. sx 9s in particular tend to engage in optimistic fantasies where everything is loving and everyone is at peace to avoid the pain of facing reality and accept that it cannot change. Sx 9s are described (in a book on 9 by Naranjo and his collaborators) as "often prey to a delirium of omnipotence" where they believe that they can control and change everything - even as their sloth means they aren't putting in the effort to do so. Mapleshade has the genuine, delusional belief that just by revealing her kits' father at the right time, she will be able to create peace between ThunderClan and RiverClan, fantasizing about everything going positively and everyone being impossibly accepting. When she loses every cat she has "merged" with, and her happy fantasy is shattered, Mapleshade has nothing left, leading to her tirelessly pursuing revenge while hallucinating her kits wanting her to do so, because even when she has lost them her whole identity is so bound up in them that she must imagine them there with her, and everything she does has to be dedicated to avenging them. For other types I've seen people vote: 3 doesn't make sense because Mapleshade never shows any care for her image or objective markers of success. 4 makes a little more sense and seeking revenge is typical of 4s, but her personality before everything happens is very un-4-like - she has no sense of being flawed and different or ever sets herself apart from others, but identifies and "merges" with her family and has an overly positive vision of the future (positive outlook) rather than focusing on melancholy and suffering. It is only when she literally has nothing left that she focuses on the negatives in her life; she pursues revenge because of her lost sense of being after her kits, who she "merged with" in the manner of an sx 9, are dead, but her life still has to revolve around them somehow anyhow (thus her hallucinating the kits convincing herself revenge is the way to still be close to them and merge with them even when they are dead); revenge is never something she naturally resorts to out of a consistent sense of bitterness and envy, but something she resorts to in extreme circumstances when how she normally sustains herself is gone.
