Biyografi
Yaşar Nuri Öztürk (1951–2016) was a Turkish theologian, Islamic philosopher, lawyer, professor, and politician who became one of the most influential modern Qur’an-centred thinkers in Turkey. Educated in both theology and law at Istanbul University, he served for about twelve years as an imam and preacher before completing his doctorate in Islamic philosophy in 1980, becoming an associate professor in 1986, and later founding and leading the Theology Faculty of Istanbul University between 1993 and 2002. He taught internationally, including in the United States, and entered politics as an Istanbul deputy for the CHP in 2002, eventually founding the People’s Rise Party in 2005. Öztürk’s most famous works, especially Kur’an’daki İslam and his widely printed Turkish translation of the Qur’an, reflect his lifelong mission to distinguish what he called “indirilmiş din” (the revealed religion) from “uydurulmuş din” (the religion distorted by human additions). He advocated a return to the Qur’an itself, emphasising reason, justice, human dignity, and compatibility of Islam with modern values like democracy and human rights, and he was never afraid to question or confront falsehoods, dogmatism, or comfortable lies, insisting that the Qur’an must be interpreted with honesty, logic, and courage. Throughout his public life he embodied dignity, intellectual integrity, and fearlessness, challenging rigid traditionalism and urging ordinary people to read and understand the Qur’an without dependence on authoritarian clergy. His legacy is that of a principled, rational, and deeply sincere thinker who saw “true Islam” as the Qur’an’s ethical message of freedom, justice, and human worth.
