It’s interesting that, despite being very young when he took the throne after his grandfather died, and being bossed around in childhood by his formidable grandmother and much older courtiers, he had the courage and passion to be a good ruler. His ambition to lead as a second crusader in war against Morocco eventually cost him his life, but he didn’t die as a coward; his last quote was, “true freedom can only be gained by sacrificing my own life” as he ran, bravely, towards the enemies. He was remembered as a legend and symbol of hope possibly because of this impetuous yet courageous death. I recently went on a trip to Portugal and saw several historical monuments dedicated to him, and I took a glimpse of his statue when I was in Lisbon. He may not have lived long, but he left his name as a young badass legend in history.

Biyografi

Sebastian (Portuguese: Sebastião I Portuguese pronunciation: [sɨbɐʃˈti.ɐ̃w̃]; 20 January 1554 – 4 August 1578) was King of Portugal from 11 June 1557 to 4 August 1578 and the penultimate Portuguese monarch of the House of Aviz. He was the son of João Manuel, Prince of Portugal, and his wife, Joanna of Austria. He was the grandson of King John III of Portugal and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. He disappeared (presumably killed in action) in the battle of Alcácer Quibir. Sebastian I is often referred to as The Desired (Portuguese: o Desejado) or The Asleep (Portuguese: o Adormecido), as the Portuguese people longed for his return to end the decline of Portugal that began after his death. He is considered to be the Portuguese example of the King asleep in mountain legend as Portuguese tradition states his return, in a foggy dawn, on Portugal's greatest hour of need.
