Anchoring bias is a cognitive bias where individuals rely too heavily on the initial information presented to them (the "anchor") when making subsequent judgments or decisions. The initial piece of information, even if irrelevant or arbitrary, can influence people's thought processes and lead them to make estimates or judgments that are skewed toward the initial anchor. For example, if someone is asked whether the population of a city is above or below 10 million, and then subsequently asked to estimate the actual population, their estimate might be unconsciously influenced by the initial anchor of 10 million, leading to an overestimation compared to someone who was given a lower initial anchor.
