yall be like: "im gonna vote every autistic coded character as a 5 bc of stereotypes!" TOUYA IS SP4: MY ARGUMENTS COMPILED touya is a SP4. he exemplifies the passion of envy in every sense of the word. he is envious of everyone around him, and exercises introjection (the 4 defense mechanism) near constantly. he is tenacious, a key aspect of self preservation 4s, he swallows his pain and focuses on proving he can endure through his struggles so he has value. ENVY: envy is a pretty easy concept to understand, but for some reason people seem to ignore the fact that touya's entire character is built around envy. touya envies nearly everyone around him, and this envy is what causes him to take action throughout the story. i will go over the different instances of envy that touya exhibits throughout the story, as well as how envy is manifested in the SP4. 1. his envy towards his father. when he confronts his dad about why he turned to street music touya states: "above all, i love the way you play the piano. i wished that i could play as confidently and elegantly as you." the main reason why he ran away from classical music was his feelings of inferiority and sadness that he could never live up to how amazing his dad was at classical music. touya experiences overwhelming feelings of inferiority and shame (key traits of E4) about himself and his skills constantly throughout the story. in a card story, touya expresses this jealousy about his father and his own shame about his skill further: "i loved when my father played piano. he used his vast knowledge and thorough music theory to piece together the emotion and scenery the composer wanted to depict with such detail, and i loved that sound. there were times i dreamt i could become like that as well. that's why i wanted to work hard to become that, and i wanted to meet my parents' expectations." touya expressed a deep desire to be as amazing at music as his father, but when he realized he could never reach that, he eventually decided to give up on that dream. he compared himself constantly to his father and wanted desperately to meet his parents' expectations, but felt that he always fell short. this is a great example of how subdued envy directed at oneself can look in the SP4. 2. his envy towards akito. throughout the story, touya mentions that "i'm not like akito", "i wish i had as strong of a resolve as akito does", "i am undeserving of performing on the same stage as him", etc. it's clear that with his overwhelming respect of akito comes an underlying jealousy and shame. he feels as if he doesn't compare to akito when it comes to dedication and drive. 3. his envy towards the vivids. when he sees kohane and an perform on stage for the first time, touya has the realization that the others, including akito, have this 'quality' about them that makes them on the same 'level' as each other, where they are meant to stand on stage. meanwhile, he believes that he lacks this quality, and as such he decides he should quit music because he'll only hold everyone back. ("i thought so. those two are the same as you [akito]. but i'm... i'm the only one who's different...") this shows not only his envy towards the others but another key characteristic of a 4: believing that there is something inherently flawed or lacking in him that others have. he believes that he is inherently different, flawed, compared to the others, and those feelings of inferiority make him believe he doesn't deserve to stand on stage with the rest of them. envy, in the SP4, is manifested differently than other E4 subtypes. you might be comparing touya to a much more stereotypical 4 right now, like ena. but the SP4's envy is different in that it is directed towards oneself and causes the SP4 to internalize those feelings of jealousy and believe they need to make up for their perceived deficiency. as they constantly compare themselves to others, they force themselves to make up for their deficiencies and 'stains' as naranjo called them. touya fits this to a T. because he feels guilty for his perceived flaws compared to the rest of VBS, he believes that he has to make up for being such a disappointment by quitting so akito can find someone better to be his partner. this, in itself, is a form of self-sacrifice and endurance, although it might not seem like it at first. it is revealed later that touya's deepest desire is to just chase akito's dream with him and stay singing with akito forever. however, touya recklessly forces himself to quit even though it pains him and he doesn't want to, because he believes that he is inferior to the rest of the group, and he has to put himself through pain and suffering in order to make up for his stain. touya puts himself through a classic masochistic self-punishment in order to make up for his flaws. it's an almost SO4-ish action, in a sense (he definitely has his SO4 moments), which only proves further my point that touya is E4. it's definitely not E5 behavior. -
