It easy to assume that Poe’s harshness as a critic is a sign of Ti. This is a misunderstanding. Ti can be brutally honest, but it doesn’t go out of its way to be harsh. As a Thinking function, Ti is not attempting to make any sort of value judgement. Poe’s critics are so harsh in part because they are so personal. His conclusions aren’t just that the stories mechanical failed, but they (and by association the writer who wrote them) are without value. This is a Feeling judgement, as opposed to a Thinking one. An INFJ would still make a personal value judgement, but it would consider it objective or standard. Fe types don’t like things just because other people do. Often the question of personal taste is uninteresting to the Fe type and not meant to be considered by their judgements. A Fe type may judge something as a failure according to some external standard, but it doesn’t feel like a personal evaluation to them. They may even personal enjoy thing the thing they are judging as a failure. They believe they are doing the same thing as Ti doms. They may be nicer about it (or more persuasive) because of higher Fe, but they don’t get personal because they don’t see it as personal. Fi evaluations are overtly personal, and Fi types may even prefer their judgements to be contrary to the popular standard. This Fi tendency is seen clearly with Poe (probably in part due to Type 4 emphasizes this tendency).
