Highkey disappointed to see him shoehorned into the stereotype of a Type 1 when he's the just the most well-adjusted 8 to ever exist ever. Like- yes, Xenk's a Paladin and so he's concerned with doing what's Right and Good, but type 1s don't have a monopoly on being the Good Guy. The Enneagram isn't about HOW you behave, it's about WHY you're behaving that way and Xenk's backstory makes it pretty obvious why he's fashioned himself as a Paladin. He lost everything- nearly lost his own soul to Szass Tam. He had to make himself capable of resisting the mark on him, capable of defending himself against the evil that had taken over his country, capable of defending others from the same fate. He did that by becoming a Paladin and making an oath to fight for good. If he was a 1, he'd be fighting evil in order to BE good, to make the world better and because it's the Right thing to do. And yes- he’s doing that too. I'm not saying he doesn't have a strong 1, but 8 is his core because it's more than that for him. Fighting is not just a moral question. It's instinct. It's survival. It's self-determination. Xenk's fighting evil because evil deserves to be fought. He was innocent and he lost everything, so he fights to protect the innocent- just like he should've been protected. That's peak Type 8. That's Type 8 at its very best. Some additional points: - If he was a 1, he’d be more concerned about living up to some standard of perfection, about the correctness of his actions. Even in his line “I will not be complicit in the illicit use of ill-gotten booty,” he cares less about the illegality of Edgin and his team stealing from the vault and more that the spoils get used for a good cause (cares less about being Lawful Good and more about helping the needy). - Rigid self-discipline gets associated with Type 1’s perfectionism, but it can just as easily be a way of reinforcing a Type 8’s need for self-control. - At his very first interaction with the team, Xenk showed very 8-like boundary-setting, “that is a query I prefer not to answer without knowing to whom I am speaking”. - The powers Xenk would’ve honed as a Paladin are everything an 8 would want- strength, protection from charms and corruption, the ability to heal others. Choosing to become a Paladin (and all the righteousness that comes with the role) follows the Type-8 drives for power and self-determination. - An 8’s journey to integration normally involves learning to trust others, and Xenk trusting Edgin to do the right thing had a big impact on Edgin’s character-development. Xenk came across as a character who had completed his arc before the start of the movie, and even if we don’t know how Xenk developed his capacity to trust others, it feels more meaningful and more respectful to the characters if trust was a hard-won character trait of Xenk’s as well. People have a hard time accepting that 8s can be a powerful force for good, and they like to take any character that's a moralistic hero and call them a 1. It's such a shallow reading that misunderstands both types' core drives. Fighting for justice and defending the weak is 500% the domain of Type 8s. Anyone who disagrees- I'd have you just listen to the Sleeping at Last songs for 'Eight' and 'One'...look me in the eyes and tell me I'm wrong.
