[1/4] ✮ : 𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐋 𝐂𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐚𝐬 𝐒𝐗𝟐 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐄, Disclaimer & TW. I think many people are unaware of the fact that Ethel Cain is a fictional character created by singer/songwriter, Hayden Anhedönia. Lumping the two of them together onto the same profile isn’t logical because the persona of Ethel Cain is purely fictional, and to judge Hayden’s typology by the story she’s written is almost like saying J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter have the same typology. Though I’m sure Hayden does pour a lot of her own feelings into the music she’s written to tell Ethel’s story, she’s obviously her own person that did NOT live Ethel’s life. That being said, I did change the title of this profile “Ethel Cain” and created a separate profile for Hayden Anhedönia herself which you can find in the link below. https://www.personality-database.com/profile/1740683 If you haven’t previously looked into the story of Ethel Cain for yourself, I wanted to put a warning because it can be very triggering. There is a lot about abuse and other gory topics throughout her story that I will be discussing, so obviously discretion is advised. 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐈, Enneagram. 𝐢. TWO CORE | PRIDE [“What is meant by Pride is a sense of fantastical self-aggrandizement to make the self-image appear greater than it really is, simultaneously obscuring the E2's knowledge of their own limits and boundaries. This creates a sense of privilege and entitlement, it lacks a notion of boundaries, becoming limitless in its self-perception.”] I wanted to begin with Enneagram because through the album Preacher’s Daughter we’re given tons of information about how Ethel Cain was raised and different things that have happened throughout her life as an influence on her. In the sources at the end of this post, I’ll link an article that completely explains each song in Preacher’s Daughter since it can be difficult to clearly understand the story through the songs without other annotations. I’ll also include a video essay that talks about the background behind her other EPs. The type two is described as “ego-flat” due to the type’s fixation on flattery. Flattery in the sphere of the e2 is described as “needing an approving audience”. This “audience” can differ depending on the subtype and manifest in many ways. Other sources also include the concept of “false-abundance” as the e2’s fixation, which is described as the belief that the e2 inherently has a lot of love and must give it away to become indispensable in the lives of others. The passion of pride in the e2 is ultimately what binds an individual to this way of thinking as they become too dependent on the applause they receive. The basics of the e2 make so much sense for Ethel Cain, and will even more so when these traits are described in the sexual sphere. From the start, we see Ethel on this constant search for love and approval from those around her. First, it’s with her hometown and close family. She has a legacy to live up to due to her father’s influence on their church and doesn’t want to let anyone down. Instead of thinking about herself and what she might believe and feel, she uses alcohol to drown out her sorrows, ultimately living a double life. We then hear a lot about her attempting to please many different love interests, ultimately using these people to give her some form of happiness by prying out their approval instead of loving them authentically. 𝐢𝐢. SEXUAL TWO | CONQUEST [“Passion of Pride manifests here in an extreme sensitivity about being desired or not, and sometimes as a Pride in the number of sexual conquests one has made. This subtype is the most intense of the 2 subtypes, they are obsessed with the desire to be wanted, believing that love is overcoming resistance.”] When pride meets the sexual sphere, an e2 individual will begin to develop a strong sensitivity to whether or not they are desired (oftentimes sexually). Pride can come from the amount of sexual or one-on-one “conquests” the individual has. Naranjo uses the word “aggression” to describe this subtype because this individual will believe that love comes from defeating any resistance that might get in their way. It is a need to feel irresistible and ensure a stable bond, which is achieved by flattery and seduction. I wouldn’t say Ethel Cain is physically aggressive, but throughout her music, there is a very evident theme of her attempting to get what she wants (love and freedom) and trying to defeat anything that might get in her way. I want to describe random hints of sx2 I find in Ethel Cain throughout some songs in Preacher’s Daughter. I won’t describe every song, but since there are a lot I’ll put an asterisk by those I find most important.
Biyografi
Hayden Silas Anhedönia, known professionally as Ethel Cain, is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and model. Inspired by Christian music and Gregorian chant, with lyrics focused on nostalgic and Southern Gothic themes, her music has been associated with the ambient, indie rock, and folk genres. Preacher's Daughter is Cain's debut album that conceptually draws on the artist's personal life as the daughter of a deacon, but creates a narrative "centered around the character Ethel Cain, who runs away from home only to meet a gruesome end at the hands of a cannibalistic psychopath."
