Soames is "a man of property". Like most forsytes his sole preoccupation in life is the accumulation of property. He treats Irene like a piece of property that he wants to acquire, to possess, to exercise his rights over. He collects paintings but there is never any indication that he appreciates them on any level beyond their being another kind of property for him to collect. All of this indicates low openness. He is always immaculately well ordered and presented and is generally cordial and dutiful which all indicates high conscientiousness but at the same time his attitude towards Irene is frequently characterised by rash and impulsive behaviour. He frequently seems to lose all self possession when he encounters her any time after their separation. Perhaps his conscientiousness is somewhere in the middle. His cool, aloof, chilly, reserved demeanor all suggest low extroversion.
