I feel so bad for her. ;( I mean, she had a very tragic life. She was the love of her parents’ life, and then, her father abandoned her and her mother for a woman who abused her as a servant for her own kid, and even after her father’s new wife kicked the bucket, Mary was never truly welcomed back into her father’s family, who married four times again and had a son(whom he showered the affection that Mary so much deserved) in the meantime. After her much younger half-brother bit the dust Mary finally became queen, but life never proved smooth for her. She had to put down a rebellion and execute a young girl, was accused as a fanatic and a tyrant and hated by many, her husband neglected her…, in the end, many contemporaries and historians give her sister so much credit and Mary is wrongly branded as “bloody Mary.” How worse can things be for her?
背景
Like the rest of the Tudors, Mary was very intelligent and well-educated, but she never showed the same zeal for learning as Elizabeth or Edward. While she lacked the charisma that characterized her father and sister, she was capable of inspiring great loyalty in her subjects. A very generous, motherly woman, Mary was often asked by friends to stand godmother to their children, and also acted as a substitute mother figure to her much-younger siblings. Mary I was Catholic in a big way. Prosecutions for heresy were resumed with great vigour during her reign; there were more burnt at the stake in the Marian period than in any other Tudor reign. Mary herself was not personally ferocious, but she was, like her husband Philip, morbidly conscientious. Her remark upon seeing his portrait for the first time was to say that she was "half in love" with him already. Sadly, it is unlikely that the cold and self-contained Philip reciprocated her devotion.
