I think he's one of those typed as INTJ who actually is an INTJ. I considered ISTJ, but he's too willing to break the rules: hiding Claire by himself, allowing Ellie to see Joe in custody, directly against procedure - tert. Fi making him understand her; under Si, that would have led to other actions of compassion, under Ni, he accepts to break the rules to grant her wish. And he listens to his hunches, they occasionally even overshadow his training as an investigator to only look at the facts. He feels so strongly that Lee did it that, for a long time, doesn't consider other suspects or scenarios (like Lee *and* someone else being guilty). He initially rejects Ellie's pointing out the facts (Si): Claire was there that night, has no alibi and keeps changing her story: she's a suspect, not a witness. In S3, he sends a team to watch one of the suspects "Because I don't like him". I think he's a 5w4, though. Cynicism and distrust of others' motives is common to both 5w6 & 5w4, plus take into account his training and work field. He's very withdrawn, like a 5w4, and he has this fixation on meaning, paradoxical in an otherwise very rational and fact oriented character (it may be his Ni lead, too). He says (at the end of S1) that he was *meant* to be in Broadchurch at that time (in S3 he comes back to a similar thought: he was meant to remain in B.), he was put there to solve that case. He interprets his dislike of the people and the situation (S1) as a punishment for his past mistakes (fringing on magical thinking). In S1, right before figuring out the culprit, when running out of time, he goes to the psychic in earnest, to try that avenue too, showing that, deep down, he has a small thread of belief. 5w6 doubts everything, it's more 4-like to search for and cling to meaning. And his mentality towards others is more the "I'm different than you people" of a 4 than the "together" of a 6.
背景
Hardy is an experienced detective from the city who has recently arrived in Broadchurch, wanting a quiet life after a scandal-tinged work history, after having been involved with a major murder trial — in which the suspect was released free of charge after crucial evidence was lost. Initially he and Ellie are hostile to each other as he was chosen over her to head the investigation and due to their differing personalities and views.
