Georg Wilhelm Steller (1709–1746) was a pioneering German naturalist, botanist, zoologist, and physician. He served on the historic Russian Great Northern Expedition led by Vitus Bering. This journey made him the first European naturalist to explore Alaska and the North Pacific wildlife. His meticulous observations produced the only living accounts of several North Pacific species, including the Steller's sea cow and the Steller's sea lion.
