ERWIN IS SO7 So, let's start with an analysis of the insatiability of E7. In simple words, e7s are not attracted to boring reality, they are interested in distant possibilities, everything that is “there” is good, and what is “here” is not attractive. They often have utopian, extraordinary ideals, which they strive for, bypassing all sorts of conservative conditions. Here you can immediately notice the similarity with the entire arc of Erwin’s character: the whole essence of his character was the pursuit of an unattainable dream. He was so fixated on his desire to understand the world that he wanted to sacrifice the salvation of humanity for this, and only Levi’s words stopped him from this decision. Although Erwin saved the world, his distant goals were not connected with this, his main motive was the desire to understand humanity, to find out what is hidden behind the walls, how to exterminate the titans and what is hidden in that basement. Let's talk about “planning”. This is a passion of e7, which includes both confusing fantasy with reality and convincing others of this. Plans replace reality; inventing them becomes more important than implementing them. While everyone was fighting to save humanity, Erwin did it only for himself. As a cadet in the survey corps, he convinced others of his ideas. He laid down the lives of thousands of soldiers in order to find out the truth. Moreover, he did not even allow himself to fall in love with someone, because this could distract him from his goal. Erwin believes that if he discovers the right way to do something, then everything will work out as it should, he just needs to find the right “formula”. This is a form of magical thinking e7, focusing on the imagination of the manifestation, rather than on the manifestation itself, because the latter can cause difficulties. It's easier to think than to act. However, the enthusiasm of Sevens is only a way to hide the deep dissatisfaction that they are not ready to face. SO7s are distinguished from ordinary E7s in that they hide their insatiability behind “charity,” which does not reveal their dependence on pleasure. They transform "gluttony" into a virtue, so their core is not so noticeable. They tend to postpone and accumulate their pleasure, and they are more susceptible to shame and sensitivity to criticism from others. Erwin sacrifices his dream for the sake of the battle with Zeke, and, in principle, constantly enters into dangerous battles, encourages soldiers, loses an arm, does not spare himself at all - and all in order to avoid the feeling of guilt for striving for pleasure. He deeply regretted how many lives he had to put on the line to realize his dream, although only it gave him the strength and motivation to live. In the end, he still decides to storm the front line with his soldiers and sacrifice the prospect of discovering what was in the basement, thus giving up his dream, despite the fact that his desire to comprehend the reality of the world was greater than the victory of humanity. Such “self-sacrifice” of social e7 is a narcissistic tactic aimed at inducing satisfaction. In so7, the automatic strategy of self-soothing towards others as a means of attracting and receiving attention supports addiction to pleasure and extreme avoidance of pain and dissatisfaction. From a social interaction perspective, this tactic clearly involves presenting oneself as useful and deserving of sacrifice to meet the needs of another. Simply put, people expect gratitude for their virtue in the form of the same delayed gratification. The so7s world is a mirror in which they hope to see the image of their “ideal self.” This subtype is extremely dependent on the image that the group presents to them. However, they are also aware of their deceitfulness, that the image they represent is incorrect, and this makes them feel guilty. In Erwin's case, the image is not meant in a typical way; he does not so much desire recognition and admiration from others, but rather followers in fulfilling his dream. To others, he represents the hope of humanity, but in reality his goals are purely selfish and built only on his own desires. We were not shown how much shame he feels for this trait, but we know for sure that he is aware of it and does not openly admit it; he was only able to tell Levi about this before the battle with Zeke, and then only in a moment of despair, when he had to choose between the selfish goal of his whole life and still saving humanity. Ultimately, he still suppressed his own insatiability and desire to find out the truth in that very basement. In general, so7 goals are higher than the heavens themselves, which plunges them into eternal planning and does not allow them to achieve implementation. Limitations are also set by features of an insatiable nature. Seeking more pleasure for yourself becomes seeking more pleasure for someone else. All this applies to Erwin Smith
