During the Deserted Island Special Test, Kaneda was sent as a spy to Class B's territory to scope out who the leader was. In the Class Vote in Volume 10, Kaneda came out on top with the most praise votes within Class D, gaining a "protection point" which are able to override an expulsion. Due to that, he got chosen as the Commander in the final special exam of their first year along with Ayanokouji Kiyotaka, Ichinose Honami, and Sakayanagi Arisu.
