At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships Popovici won gold medals in his two signature events (100 metres and 200 metres). On 20 June, 2022, Popovici became the first Romanian male swimmer to win a gold medal at the world aquatics championships, and is the second-youngest swimmer to win the men’s 200m freestyle event at the world championships (following Tim Shaw), being only 17 years and 278 days old.
