With Will Scarlet and Little John, one of the three who regularly appears in the oldest ballads, but rather diminished since then. He is sometimes depicted as the shortest Merry Man, probably stemming from a ballad where he disguises himself as a pageboy. In modern retellings, he is often the youngest or least experienced of the Merry Men.
