His mother died shortly after his father's imprisonment.” Godwin ascended to be chief counsellor to King Æthelred II of England and shortly feigned support towards his son Prince Edmund as well, whom he ended up killing due to his pragmatic alliance to King Canute whereby he became Earl of Wessex and married Canute's daughter Gytha with whom Godwin has 2 sons named Tostig & Harold. After Canute's death he helped Harold Harefoot to become de facto King of England.
