ENTx and Egotism: Disclaimer - One of my best friends is ENTP and my dad is ENTJ. Healthy ENTx types are not egotists and are wonderful people. This post aims to analyze how egotism manifests in these two types, which are the stereotypical ones for inflated ego. Egoitism is defined as "someone who excessively and obsessively focuses on themselves, often displaying a sense of superiority and self-importance." In MBTI, both ENTP and ENTJ are often seen as leading the charge among types for egotism. Egotism is not a type specific trait, as any type can accumulate an inflated ego, such is human nature. We want to think highly of ourselves, even among our fellow man, for our accomplishments and talents. So why do ENTx types get associated with egotism the most often? It comes from the unique combination of cognitive functions that result in nuanced ways of thinking, leading to ideas of self-assertion and exceptional uniqueness. Cognitively speaking, ENTJ and ENTP do not share any of the same functions in their stacks. Similarly to how any types that share the first three letters, but differ in the last one do. However, these types are more alike despite the differing functions. Just by looking at a simple letter typing, you can see that both ENTx types are extraverted, intuitive, and thinkers. This leads to people who are generally social and expressive (extraversion), neurotic, visionary, and abstract (intuition), and rational & logical decision makers (thinking). This combination leads people are often concerned with their social image, taking steps to ensure that their status is known and grandiose. While these two types can fall into observable egotism, the way they approach it and the way they think about themselves varies. ENTPs' Ne-Ti combination makes them exceptionally adaptable to new activities. Ne allows them to connect the abstract with the world, leading them to apply their imagination to the activities in a tangible way. Ti supplements this by taking the logic of the activity and internalizing it, leading to a quick understanding and application. This quick learning inflates the ego by proving to ENTPs by proving that they are better than others when picking up new things. It comes more naturally to them, putting them a step above the rest. This is but one example of how the ENTP can fall into egotism. The ENTP feels superior in this regard and has a desire to express this superiority. This often leads to boasting or a call to attention, leading the ENTP to put him/herself on a pedestal. These ENTPs might say things like, "I'm just better" or "I'm just smarter/funnier." The desire for recognition of outstanding achievement leads to this behavior. Egotism in ENTJs is more subtle than the outright bragging that an ENTP might exhibit. The ENTJ's combination of Te-Ni allows them to be excellent leaders and planners, able to solve complex social problems with utmost efficiency. Their Te allows for strategic and effective problem solving, creating a path for the best solution. Ni supplements this by applying this thinking long-term, accounting for the longevity and lasting effects that the solution will provide. This problem solving often leads to the ENTJ being consulted when crises come. ENTJs feels a sense of duty and importance in solving these issues, leading to their egos being inflated. This doesn't lead to egotism by superiority like the ENTP, but egotism by distinction. The egotistical ENTJ truly feels unique and fundamentally different than the people around him/her contrastingly to the ENTP, who feels superiority by comparison. For ENTJs, they might say how they "think differently" or they "are the only ones who understand." Their showcasing of egotism is less straightforward than the ENTP and is more subtle. Both types can fall into egotism, just like every other type. But the way they fall into it and the way they exhibit it is different. Not every egotist has narcissism, as they are not synonymous. Let us remember that those who do suffer from NPD are challenged in that regard, as it is chemically defined feature of them. The best advice that I can give you for dealing with egotists is to be patient, play along, but don't feed their egos too much, and know when to distance yourself. Egotists love opportunities to assert themselves, so don't fall into that trap. At the end of the day, if it is too much, walk away. It is not worth engaging in a sparring match because egotists seldom change their minds due to their stubborn nature. Finally, treat each other with respect, love your neighbor, and remember to drink water. I hope that you all have a blessed day :).
