Vigilantes are justice-oriented civilians and criminals that break the law by illegally assisting law enforcement in the persecution of other criminals. Vigilantes "take justice into their own hands" and break the law in order to protect others, even if their methods are questionable, actions are unlawful, and their ethics are dubious. In short, vigilantes have no legal authority but act as enforcers of law, order, and justice anyways.
