An ocean liner is a large passenger ship primarily used for the long voyages across the seas or oceans. This type of ship is quite versatile for it has been modified for pleasure cruises, cargo or mail and medical purposes. It has been both in civilian and military use. Ocean liners are built strong with a thicker hull to withstand the rough seas and adverse conditions encountered in the open ocean. They are stocked with large capacities of fuel and food needed for the long distances. While a few ocean liners are now docked or still in use, their golden age was from mid-1800s to mid-1900s until aviation took over the transatlantic travel.
