Hamnet is a novel written by Maggie O'Farrell in 2020, detailing the life and death of Shakespeare's son Hamnet and the effect Hamnet's death age 11 has on the family. Though the book is about Shakespeare's family, the name 'Shakespeare' is never mentioned, and his character is kept anonymous, always being referred to as 'the father', 'the husband', etc. Arguably, 'Hamnet' tells the story of Shakespeare's wife, Agnes, rather than Shakespeare himself, and even of Hamnet: most of the book is seen through Agnes's own eyes and processed through her frame of mind.
