[1/5] 𝕄𝕚𝕔𝕙𝕒𝕖𝕝 “𝔻𝕖 𝕊𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕒” 𝕋𝕠𝕨𝕟𝕝𝕖𝕪 𝕚𝕤 𝕒 𝕊𝕠𝕔𝕚𝕒𝕝 𝕋𝕙𝕣𝕖𝕖 It’s been a while since I played this game. I played this game before I found out about typology and all three protagonists from the Single Player mode have their own characteristic and charm. To be honest, due to his writing as the GTA protagonist who has found success in climbing the capitalism ladder, I never found his character interesting, especially when comparing with Trevor or Franklin. However, with my new knowledge on typology, I used personality theory to analyze his character more, and apparently, there is so much more from his character beneath his anger issues and impulsivity. The game starts with a robbery at a North Yankton bank. The robbery went awry and a guy with blond hair was killed by a gunshot. We then see a cutscene of a burial for a person named Michael “Townley”, who is presumably the blond guy that was shot dead earlier. However, the game goes to a timeskip 9 years later to show us a cutscene from Michael De Santa’s messed up life with him venting to Dr. Friedlander. As the story progresses, it is revealed that this botched robbery attempt was actually a deal by Michael and a corrupt FIB agent, and we’d get slices of Michael’s past as well. First, we will explore his past life, so stay tuned. According to friend activities dialogue, Michael didn’t have luxuries or privileges like his children and he grew up in a deprived trailer park. He suffered from his dad’s abandonment and his mom told him numerous versions of the story about why his dad abandoned them. He didn’t find any place in his home life. However, in high school, he was an acclaimed quarterback for an all-state football team. He is notably proud with this achievement of his. Unfortunately, his advancement was cut short by his injury and temperament issues. Michael: “Not much of a dr-g trade on my doorstep, so I trained.” Franklin: “You were good?” Michael: “Front page of the local paper, guys stopping me in the street - yeah, I was good... high school good.” Franklin: “So what happened?” Michael: “Injury.... temper issues... all that sh-t. Wasn't for me, I guess...” (https://youtu.be/Seg7NNVQCT8?t=4398) After that setback, Michael started his criminal life as a young adult. The game never elaborated why he chose the criminal route to make his living. However, as a criminal, he developed a modus operandi, aka quoting lines from Solomon Richard’s movies. This is an important aspect of Michael’s character, because his modus operandi ended up being his fatal flaw that exposed his lies to Trevor later on. Then in 1991, Michael met Amanda, a stripper and his future wife, for the first time. They flirted and fell in love with each other. Using money from his criminal activities, Michael bought Amanda breast implants that would help Amanda advance her prostitution career. They married and had two children, Jimmy and Tracey. Due to him having a family, he started to fear that his criminal lifestyle would bring harm to them. Of course Trevor didn’t like his stance and started mocking him as “soft”. Trevor’s ax-crazy tendencies also played a part in Michael’s attempt to escape his criminal lifestyle. He believed that Trevor would undoubtedly harm him if he dared to run away from his criminal lifestyle. So, in 2004, Michael found an opportunity with a corrupt FIB officer called Dave Norton. They both planned a staged robbery in North Yankton, which would involve Dave shooting Trevor and Michael pretending to be shot dead, which would give them win-win results, Michael with a clean state of life and new surname (aka his alias De Santa) and Dave with his promotion. However, the robbery went awry and their other partner, Brad, was killed instead. Michael and his family subsequently moved to Los Santos, living in a mansion, before his home life started to fall apart.
