What personality type is Charles Macaulay? Charles Macaulay is an ENFJ personality type in MBTI, 6w7 - - 268 in Enneagram, in Big 5, EIE in Socionics.
I've been meaning to write something about Charles for a while as I've written about all of the others but just haven't got round to it - time to do it now, I suppose! Also, I'm really surprised as to how little discussion there is around him on here. He is definitely the most underrated character in the book; he is so fascinating. But yes, Charles is undoubtedly a Fe dom. In Book 1 Charles is the person who constantly goes out of his way to make Richard feel comfortable; we see this in the first class scene where Charles runs to Richard's defence after Henry grills him, and also in the first dinner scene at the twins house where Henry and Francis are talking about events that Richard was not present for and Charles is the one to explain everything to Richard. Obviously I'm not trying to do the Fe = nice thing here, but Charles's tendencies to go out of his way to include Richard hint at Charles wanting to keep external harmony and make sure the presence of Richard isn't harming the collective vibe of the group. Even in book 2 after Charles goes off the rails, his Fe is still very present. I think a fantastic example of Charles's Fe which I'm surprised no one else has pointed out is the scene where he and Richard are walking back from the courthouse. This scene tells us that Charles is the only member of the group who is able to see the group from other people's perspectives. Charles tells Richard (a Ti dom with inferior Fe - he doesn't quite get this) about how strange Henry looks to other people and how he isn't very good at explaining himself and generally looking 'normal' to others. Charles ends up being correct, as we see when Julian discovers the letter and Henry's confident facade falls and Richard tells us about how unusual it was to watch Henry stumble over his words. This, I think, tells us how good Charles is at reading into social cues and behaviours from the perspective of what is 'socially correct', from a shared, objective point of view. Seeing social groups in terms of social correctness and seeing people in terms of fitting to it/sticking out from it and how that looks to other social groups is extremely Fe. I'm a little stuck on Charles's perceiving axis - if anyone has any thoughts on it I would love to hear. ENFJ voters - where are you seeing auxillary Ni exactly? I'm not doubting it's there, I'm just having a tough time seeing it, especially when compared to Henry, Camilla and Richard who are all fairly obvious Ni users. I am also quite open the possibility of Charles being an ESFJ, if anyone has any thoughts?
