Hijiyama is not a person that leads with a thinking function. His primary instinct, especially when pushed, is essentially reliant on his self-image as a manly, duty-bound, heterosexual son of Japan, and the worldview that derives from it. This self-image is so strong that keeps him from acting in logical self-preservation or self-interest, like eating from the trash when starving or acknowledging his attraction to another man. He won't even abandon the "son of Japan" business after realizing that everything was a simulation, instead drawing personal strength from it to fight. Fi-dom is not just a good fit, it's basically what drives him and his story - the challenging and development of his self-image.
