i’ve yet to see anyone explain why he’s 9w8 instead of 9w1. almost like there’s no reason and y’all just see 8 as the bad person type. he never shows any desire for control, quite the opposite actually. he allows this whole lie about connor to snowball out of his control all because he just didn’t want to initially upset the murphys. w1 doesn’t make someone incapable of doing wrong things. have you guys even listened to words fail? “i never meant to make it such a mess / i never thought that it would go this far” “i never had that perfect girl / who somehow could see the good part of me” “that’s not a worthy explanation / i know there is none / nothing can make sense of all these things i’ve done” “no i’d rather pretend i’m something better than these broken parts / pretend i’m something better than this mess that i am” do any of those lyrics say w8 over w1 to you? the main reason he ended up building this whole web of lies was because he couldn’t let the murphys down and in some way he felt like he was helping them. he did not have much control over the situation from day 1. he went with what the murphys said and started building on it because he didn’t want to lose the second family that he had gained from this situation (9’s fear of separation). i understand why one may have a difficult time understanding why w1 would do the things that he did, but this brings us right back to words fail and his immense guilt over the entire situation and his want to make things right. not once in the entire musical does he assert himself or attempt to gain power/control. i have no idea where any of you are seeing w8.
