It is sad that many people still can‘t accept that Fe isn‘t a function that makes you entirely selfless or even selfless at all. Fe bases values on external judgements and tries to strengthen the external harmony, as they need it to find internal peace. Fe users are well aware of how they are perceived and if unhealthy they can use this ability to manipulate the image others have on them. This is what Humbert does. He tries to convince others and himself that he isn‘t as bad for what he did, using his role as an artist and author to justify his deeds before others and himself. This is also why he totally lacks in self awareness up to the end. He isn’t guided by a internal moral intuition and an awareness ofhos won motives, but constantly switches perspective. He also shows positive Fe qualities, but in a twisting way. He is quite charismatic, because he is able to read the atmosphere around him and can read other peoples desires, but he often isn’t really aware of his own or rationalizes them. He is calculating and analytically detached (Ti= not necessarily guided by his feelings of the moment (lack of Fi) His main problem is inferior Se. He seeks after and abstract long gone ideal (Ni), which is completely delusional and manifests physically in the most grotesque and perverse way. He views Lolita’s innocent in a symbolic way and becomes obsessed over it and really struggles with changing his perspective over the course of the story. He is not oriented on different possibilities or that things could be different than his ideal and singlemindedly pursues his „love“ for her.
