Personality

What personality type is James Sunderland? James Sunderland is an INFP personality type in MBTI, 6w5 - sp/sx - 649 in Enneagram, RLUAI in Big 5, IEI in Socionics.

James's inferior Te is the biggest source of his problems, part of the big reveal of Silent Hill 2 is realising that James is suffering from a psychotic break. For a significant portion of Silent Hill 2 you can go back to his car, which is part of what makes him so fascinating, he's a horror protagonist who could easily choose to run away, but lingers instead. The town doesn't need to keep him, it just exists as a razor for him to cut himself with. The monsters are of his own creation, the horror is his own desire for punishment. He has no Fe or Se, he's terrible with people, he hides in a closet with his flashlight still on and is disturbingly quick to put his hand down a toilet for a key. Definitely not a sensory oriented person. The clunky combat just serves to portray James as someone barely capable. Also, his endings include suicide (generally considered the most likely and thematically fitting ending), repeating the cycle and sinking further into delusion, or attempting to bring Mary back via a ritual. Only one ending has him actually move on. Seems inclined towards Fi-Si. He's one of the most unhealthy INFPs I've seen.
