Mathias Vogel is the main antagonist of the 2018 action movie Tomb Raider. Mathias Vogel a treasure hunter and the leader of a group of mercenaries who have been sent by the Trinity on the Yamatai island to find the tomb of the ancient Japanese queen Himiko and also the father of Lara Croft, Richard Croft. Also, he is Richard's rival archeologist and Lara's arch-nemesis. Vogel is shown to be rude, psychopathic, and determined to do his own thing. However, his motivation behind it was that he wanted to see his family after seven years of being in Yamatai, as well as his madness to find Himiko, which made him a man who did not care about anything except for getting out of that island. Vogel's character is inspired by several story arcs of the rebooted video game franchise. His name Mathias, as well as being imprisoned on the island of Himiko, is taken from Tomb Raider (2013) while the organization he is working for, Trinity, serves as the main antagonistic faction in the sequel game.
